As the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo draw near, so does Japan's showcase for a hydrogen society. Toyota has been at the forefront of Japan’s efforts to use hydrogen and fuel cells to power cars, heat homes and keep factories running while in other countries around the world, the trend seems to veer toward electric cars, particularly in the US and Europe. Meanwhile, For that reason, Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla Inc., has famously scorned hydrogen vehicles as expensive and impractical.

So far, hydrogen has been Toyota's zero emission technology of choice. However, this may be about to change. In a recent Nikkei report, the Japanes carmaker intends to launch its EV model in 2020, coinciding with the Tokyo Olympic Games. Toyota's change of heart may have something to do with its struggles to sell hydrogen fuel-cell cars so far.

Korean automaker Kia is continuing with plans to increase the number of alternative fuel cars in its future lineup. By 2020 Kia hopes to offer 14 models globally, including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery-electric cars, and even some hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.

NASA plans to use hydrogen fuel cells to propel its planetary surface vehicles and batteries to spin drill bits in its power hand tools for future manned landing missions, including the 2035 trip to Mars. Fuel cells are also set to power the lunar and planetary bases where the astronauts will live and work.

David Wenger of Wenger Engineering GmbH has just completed a two year test drive of the Mercedez Benz B-Class F-cell vehicle and recently presented his results. In his presentation, he covered issues related to infrastructure, apps for HRS stations, and the general handling of the vehicle. Suffice it to say that the results are sobering.
