As the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo draw near, so does Japan's showcase for a hydrogen society. Toyota has been at the forefront of Japan’s efforts to use hydrogen and fuel cells to power cars, heat homes and keep factories running while in other countries around the world, the trend seems to veer toward electric cars, particularly in the US and Europe. Korean automaker Kia is continuing with plans to increase the number of alternative fuel cars in its future lineup. NASA plans to use hydrogen fuel cells to propel its planetary surface vehicles and batteries to spin drill bits in its power hand tools for future manned landing missions, including the 2035 trip to Mars. Fuel cells are also set to power the lunar and planetary bases where the astronauts will live and work.
