Nordic Grants:
Nordic Energy Research (Nordisk Energiforskning) is the funding institution for energy research under the Nordic Council of Ministers – an intergovernmental body between Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Iceland. Currently there are special funds available for “Electric Transport” – which includes hydrogen.

NORA, Nordic Atlantic Cooperation (Nordisk Atlantsamarbejde): is a regional committee under the Nordic Council of Ministers regional political collaboration program and functions as an intergovernmental collaborative agency and facilitator. Operating within the Nordic framework and utilizing a project-based platform, affords NORA a unique opportunity to stimulate and facilitate transnational collaboration, based on Nordic goals and values. NORA is financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers and its work is supplemented by grants from within its collaborating regions, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland and the west coast of Norway.

Nopef, Nordic Project Fund: the objective of the fund is to support Nordic cooperation within the framework of its mandate. All Nopef operations shall include the aim of keeping a high Nordic profile and to contribute to the common good of the Nordic countries in such a way that a Nordic added value is created. The specific aim of the fund is to strengthen the international competitiveness of Nordic enterprises by providing co-financing for feasibility studies that support export projects and the internationalisation of Nordic enterprises. To this end, the fund works in cooperation with national, Nordic and international organisations.

NPP, Northern Periphery Programme: aims to help peripheral and remote communities on the northern margins of Europe to develop their economic, social and environmental potential. The success of the programme will be built on joint projects creating innovative products and services for the benefit of the programme partner countries and Europe as a whole. The diverse regions of the Northern Periphery Programme area share common features such as harsh climate conditions, sparseness of population and remoteness. Transnational cooperation provides excellent opportunities for finding new ways to address shared challenges and explore new opportunities.

Norwegian grants
Norges Forskningsråd (Forskningsrådet): an institution which is funding (partly or 100%) several large programmes undertaken by universities, R&D institutions and industry. For hydrogen programmes/projects the most relevant program is RENERGI.

Transnova: an institution that supports (with grants) the development of sustainable transport solutions and has been co funder of the HyNor project, in particular the H2Moves Oslo project and Oslo Bus project (part of the European CHIC bus program.

Innovasjon Norge: an institution who is helping industry and entrepreneurs to develop and bring to the market better and new solutions in all business sectors. They have available grants, loans and financial guarantees as their working tools.

European grants:
JTI (Joint Technology Initiatives): Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking has the largest call for hydrogen in Europe the spring of 2011. The call will be based on the Multi-Annual Implementation Plan (http://www.fch-ju.eu/sites/default/files/documents/fch_ju_multi_annual_implement_plan.pdf).

European Commission, CORDIS - 7th framework programme (FP7): the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) is designed to support a wide range of participants: from universities, through public authorities to small enterprises and researchers in developing countries.

Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP): with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as its main target, the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP) supports innovation activities (including eco-innovation), provides better access to finance and delivers business support services in the regions. It encourages a better take-up and use of information and communication technologies (ICT) and helps to develop the information society. Also, it promotes the increased use of renewable energies and energy efficiency.

EUREKA's Eurostars Programme: the first European funding and support programme to be specifically dedicated to SMEs. The Eurostars Programme addresses a niche market of research and innovation-performing businesses that fulfill the EU-adopted definition of an SME, are based in a Eurostars participating country (including e.g. Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, the United Kingdom) and that, in addition, invest 10% or more of full-time equivalent or annual turnover in research activities.

COST, European cooperation in science and technology: an intergovernmental framework for European Cooperation in Science and Technology, allowing the coordination of nationally-funded research on a European level. COST contributes to reducing the fragmentation in European research investments and opening the European Research Area to cooperation worldwide.

Canadian grants:
If you were to apply for funding from Canada, you have to remember that the NORA funding only will cover the partners from the NORA countries. Possible partners from the neighbouring regions will have to apply from local funding agencies. Furthermore you have to bear in mind that the application should have more than one of the NORA countries present in the application.
